Key Amendments under Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) (Second Amendment ) Rules, 2022

The Department of Consumer Affairs vide the Notification dated 14 July 2022 (‘Notification’) has made amendments under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 (‘LMPC Rules’).

The following provisos have been inserted under Rule 6 of the LMPC Rules for affixation of QR code for various details in respect for all electronic products manufactured, imported or packaged after 15 July 2022:

  • Name, Address and other information of the manufacturer or packer or importer
    • All electronic products shall declare the name of the manufacturer or packer or importer, as the case may be, on the package itself for a period of 1 year from the date of manufacture, import or packaging and such declaration shall also inform the consumer to scan the QR code printed on the package to get the details such as address and other related information which is not available on the declaration on the package itself 
  • Name of the product, number or quantity of the product
    • All electronic products shall, for a period of 1 year from the date of manufacture, import or packaging inform the consumer to scan the QR code printed on the package to get the details such as common or generic name of the commodity if not already made available through the declaration on the package itself
    • In case the package contains more than one product, details regarding the name, number or quantity of the product shall be made available through the QR code if not already made available through the declaration on the package itself
  • Size and dimension of the commodity
    • All electronic products shall, for a period of 1 year from the date of manufacture, import or packaging inform the consumer to scan the QR code for information regarding size and dimension of the commodity, if not already made available through the declaration on the package itself
  •  Telephone number and the e-mail address
    •  All electronic products shall, for a period of 1 year from the date of manufacture, import or packaging shall .  inform the consumer to scan the QR code for information regarding telephone number and e-mail address if not already made available through the declaration on the package itself

The above amendments in the LMPC Rules shall come into effect from the date of publication  in the Official Gazette.
